Action packed “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” more than delivers.

Best of the Franchise! Movie Review.

Who can forget the reaction audiences had when the trailer for the first “Sonic” film was released? It’s rare for viewers to express their disapproval of a character’s design and witness such a successful outcome. The third entry in the franchise follows the blue hedgehog on a new adventure. Directed by Jeff Fowler, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” features the voices of Ben Schwartz, Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Jim Carrey, and James Marsden.

The first two films are entertaining, formulaic action-adventure movies aimed at children, but they also appeal to fans of the game. The first film is over-the-top and cliché, while the second incorporates some elements of seriousness. This third installment is undoubtedly the best of the franchise, featuring several emotionally moving moments. I also had the opportunity to watch the “Knuckles” series on Paramount+, which I thought was well done. It adds context to Knuckles’s story in this third entry.

While the franchise focuses on Sonic and his friends and family, the standout performer in this movie is Jim Carrey, who excels in dual roles. His characters are hilarious, and he does an excellent job portraying both Grandpa and Grandson Robotnik. Carrey delivers perfect comedic timing and showcases some cool, choreographed dance scenes. If the rumors are true and this performance marks his farewell from Hollywood, it would be a fitting exit (if you’ve seen the film, you’ll understand why).

Shadow’s story gives this entry into the franchise an emotionally impactful narrative. Keanu Reeves brings a vengeful tone to Shadow, reminiscent of John Wick, given their similar background stories. What truly impressed me were the action sequences. They feature various anime-style fighting and animation, and certain characters look quite badass visually when they wield specific powers, paying homage to the video game. Also, be sure to stay for both the mid and end-credit scenes.

Overall, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is the best entry in this franchise. It’s a fun, action-packed animated movie that will entertain its targeted audience.
