“M3GAN 2.0” is an Entertaining Action-Comedy Thriller

by Rosa Parra

We are continuing the summer of sequels with the upcoming film “M3GAN 2.0,” directed by Gerard Johnstone and starring Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jemaine Clement, Ivanna Sakhno, Amie Donald, and Aristotle Athari. In this sequel, the infamous M3GAN must collaborate with her creator, Gemma (played by Williams), to protect Cady (played by McGraw) and the world from the threat posed by AMELIA.

I was a fan of the first movie. It surprised me by how inventive it was with the technology and how incorporating horror elements made it more entertaining and memorable. At Cinemacon we were shown the trailer and it was introduced by Violet herself. There is no denying that the first movie was a massive hit and cultural phenomenon, so this sequel has some big shoes to fill.

Cady is growing up and has started training in martial arts for her own protection. At the same time, she is developing a fascination with and talent for computer science, following in her aunt’s footsteps. Both Gemma and Cady have moved into a house that is controlled by artificial intelligence, which has a little mind of its own.

Sometimes, movies are created simply to entertain and distract the audience from current real events, even if AI is very relevant. This film exemplifies that purpose. -The Latino Slant

The movie begins by introducing AMELIA, who was designed to assist the military as a spy by completing dangerous tasks. It quickly becomes clear that AMELIA is a formidable force—she is strong, fast, and tactful, and she has gained self-awareness. Soon, she stops following orders and targets everyone involved in her creation, ultimately aiming for Gemma, as it was Gemma’s M3gan blueprint that was used to develop AMELIA.

This film is packed with action sequences and comedy, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I found it enjoyable due to its satirical approach. M3gan was a delightful character—she was sassy and funny. The rest of the cast was fine as well. Overall, the movie isn’t offensive; it’s a harmless action-comedy that explores the potential impact of AI on society.

Overall, “M3GAN 2.0” is an entertaining action-comedy thriller that explores the potential of AI in the near future. It’s not bad, but it isn’t excellent either. It’s simply M3H-GAN.

Rating: 5/10.
