Pixar’s “Hoppers” Delivers a Heartfelt Exploration of Nature and Comedy

by Rosa Parra

Hoppers is the newest Pixar film, directed by Daniel Chong, featuring voices by Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Dave Franco, Jon Hamm, Melissa Villasenor, and Eduardo Franco. It follows Mabel (voiced by Curda) as she uses new technology to uncover animal world mysteries beyond her imagination.

Pixar has created some of my favorite films and has elevated animation to a respected art form. I always look forward to their new releases. The post-credits scene from Elio hinted at this film, with a somewhat underwhelming and confusing emoji scene. Having watched the film, I understand the reference. Does Hoppers compare to top-tier Pixar movies? It comes very close.

Pixar’s strength is in delivering meaningful messages to both young and adult audiences. In Hoppers, the theme of coexisting with nature and its creatures invites reflection. Our relationship with nature—especially as humans—also warrants consideration. We often see land as a resource for profit or modernization.

Spending a day or two experiencing life from an animal’s perspective provides valuable insight into their natural habitats. The comedic moments kept me engaged and entertained. The jokes flowed smoothly, and the situations were genuinely funny. It was interesting to see how, even within the animal kingdom, there is species separation and hierarchical leadership. The film begins with Mabel in elementary school, wanting to rescue pets from various classes. Humans often do whatever we want with animals—using them for learning, ownership, or companionship—without considering the impact of our actions. Mabel simply wants to free them and let nature take its course.

The depiction of scientists was particularly interesting. Often, scientists experiment without fully considering possible harmful consequences. Conversely, many environmentalists—many of whom are scientists—aim to preserve ecosystems as sanctuaries and protected lands. In Hoppers, we see how building roads and highways across lakes, ponds, and woods directly impacts local wildlife—thanks to efforts driven by politicians.

Overall, Hoppers is a funny, engaging, and well-paced film about life, nature, and our small place in a vast universe. With heartfelt charm, it’s one of Pixar’s best in recent years.
