“The Unexpecteds” is a Fun, Action-Packed Heist Film Driven by Heart.

by Rosa Parra

“The Unexpecteds,” is written and directed by Alejandro Montoya Marin. The movie revolves around a group of friends who are scammed and must find a way to recover their money. It features a talented cast that includes Matt Walsh, Alejandro de Hoyos, Francisco Ramos, Chelsea Rendon, Sonya Smith, John Kaler, Jason Konopisos and Gerry Bednob.

Metal Mike, portrayed by Kaler, is an influencer whose primary role is to persuade his followers to invest money in his get-rich-quick scheme. Gary (played by Walsh), Pati (Rendon), Carl (Ramos), and Kurt (Bednob) realize that all their hard-earned money has vanished after being deceived by Metal Mike. As a result, Carl comes up with a plan that could help his friends get their money back – by seeking the assistance of his estranged father, Felipe (De Hoyos).

The film is action-packed, humorous, and serves as a stark reminder of the ruthlessness of money-making schemes. Recently, we have seen religious leaders scamming their followers and YouTubers promoting items or lifestyles that promise luxury but ultimately lead to nowhere. Montoya Marin showcases his talents in both the script and direction. The film features several funny moments between friends that add a layer of silliness to a serious subject. The actors deliver their performances with impeccable comedic timing.

The action sequences are reminiscent of “John Wick” and “Mission: Impossible,” enhanced by sharp editing. In addition to the directing, acting, and stunt work, the editing stands out as a highlight. It is quick and contributes to the fast-paced flow that makes the movie entertaining and engaging.

The stories vary from a mother who is doing everything she can for her child to a fractured relationship between a father and son. There’s a man trying to regain his wife’s trust and an older man who, despite having health issues, doesn’t have much to lose. All of these narratives are compelling, but the father-son duo of Felipe and Carl stands out. Felipe is like a Latino James Bond, with stunning looks and exceptional fighting skills. He carries himself with such confidence and style that it leaves me curious about his backstory.

Metal Mike is essentially a puppet controlled by the mastermind Jordan (Konopisos)—an ambitious, power-hungry individual who is willing to do anything to obtain money. Jordan serves as a conventional antagonist, successfully earning the viewers’ hatred. His harsh treatment of Metal Mike adds another layer to this dynamic. complexity to the influencer, who has no other option but to do what he’s told.

The dynamic between the friends is relatable, and their intimate moments are entertaining.

Overall, “The Unexpecteds” is a fun, action-packed heist film driven by heart and executed with an unapologetic directorial vision. Montoya Marin is a creative filmmaker who leaves me curious about what he can produce with a higher budget.
