Three Latino Valentine’s Day Movies to Binge this Weekend!

1. “Your Monster.”

Melissa Barrera embodies the horror, the rom-com, and the musical genre perfectly. It is no wonder why the titular role of Laura Franco went to her. The film opens with Laura being in a dark place in her life. Her health isn’t the best and her heart is broken after her boyfriend ends their relationship. One day, she heard loud noises on the second floor. In her closet, she finds a monster, who enters her life to teach her some valuable lessons.

The script does a superb job navigating the comedic moments with the dramatic, serious ones sprinkled with the perfect dose of gory horror movie elements and musical numbers. It sounds like all these movie genres wouldn’t work together, but they do. Her chemistry with the monster was fantastic. Barrera’s versatility is undeniable as she effortlessly sings, dances, and puts forward her emotional range.

“Your Monster” succeeds in blending comedy with horror and rom-com with musical elements wonderfully. It left me wanting more films like this.  – Rosa Parra

Now on Netflix.

2. “Say a Little Prayer.”

That same reverence for friendships that sustain us and propel us toward a brighter future sits at the heart of Say a Little Prayer. Directed by Patrick Perez Vidauri, the film follows the lives of Adela, Christina, and Ruby—three friends whose supportive bond stands in stark contrast to their unfulfilled love lives. However, a supernatural twist occurs when Adela’s relatives intervene with a prayer to the patron saint, San Antonio. As a result, the women and their already complicated romantic paths are thrown off course.

The romance genre can be a fairly divisive one for many film lovers, especially the rom-com subgenre. For me, they’ve always provided a constant source of feel-good entertainment for late-night snacking. From Boomerang to My Best Friend’s Wedding to Two Can Play That Game and the recent Rye Lane, they carry fond memories I can always recall and appreciate upon rewatch. Say a Little Prayer captures much of that same charm, finding its greatest strength through the friendship of its three leads. Vannessa Vasquez, Jackie Cruz, and Vivian Lamolli share a natural chemistry that fuels the film’s heartwarming and witty moments. -D.Movieman

3. “Juan Gabriel: I Must, I Can, I Will”

Netflix’s new four-part series, Juan Gabriel: I Must, I Can, I Will, explores his extraordinary life and career through rare footage, candid interviews, and personal reflections, revealing both his dazzling public persona and the private pain that shaped him.

The documentary also sheds light on his lifelong search for love and belonging. He surrounded himself with strong maternal figures and built a chosen family—a beautiful circle of love with his children and the woman who helped raise them. It also examines his legal troubles, his closeted yet unmistakable homosexuality, and the growing arrogance that sometimes shadowed his later years. After a bout of pneumonia in 2014—just two years before his fatal heart attack in 2016—Juan Gabriel seemed to sense his time was running out, working with renewed urgency to leave behind as much art as possible. Those final moments on camera feel all the more poignant and heartbreaking for it.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to his story, Juan Gabriel: I Must, I Can, I Will is an essential watch—a moving, beautifully constructed tribute to a man whose life and music defied convention, celebrated emotion, and touched millions. -Cyn’s Corner
