Finally! My favorite film that screened at this year’s (2025) Sundance Film Festival is getting its theatrical release. “Twinless” is written, directed, and stars James Sweeney alongside Dylan O’Brien. The story follows Roman (played by O’Brien) and Dennis (Sweeney), who meet in a twin support group. They develop a friendship that is tested when secrets come to light.
At the festival, the film was awarded the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic Competition and received a Special Jury Award for acting, honoring Dylan O’Brien.
The film delves into the profound question of how one navigates life after losing a twin sibling. It delicately navigates the stages of grief while incorporating occasional dark humor. The narrative examines themes of loneliness, codependency, friendship, and the transformation of the psyche following the loss of a loved one.

Dylan O’Brien portrays both Roman and Rocky, a pair of twins who are completely opposite in personality and physical appearance. O’Brien delivers a stellar performance as both characters, especially as Roman, as he mourns the loss of his brother. His portrayal is one of my favorite performances of the year. James Sweeney showcases his talent as a triple threat—writing, directing, and co-starring in this film. The script, direction, and his performance are all equally strong. The story avoids being formulaic, with unexpected twists and turns that are truly impressive.
The dynamic between Dennis and Roman feels genuine, and their conversations are both intimate and relatable. I’ve had similar discussions with friends. Several scenes stand out, including one set in a hotel where Dennis and Roman have a candid conversation about grief. Dennis encourages Roman to speak to his deceased brother and express everything he wishes he could say. This scene is intense and emotionally charged. Another memorable moment occurs at a house party where Dennis and Roman separate to engage with others. The screen splits in two, allowing us to follow both characters simultaneously. This creative approach effectively advances the story.

The film’s third act is gripping and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I won’t spoil the details, but I can assure you that it is worth every second, and the ending does not disappoint.
Overall, “Twinless” is an unforgettable exploration of grief, codependency, friendship, loneliness, and sibling relationships. With an award-worthy performance from Dylan O’Brien, Sweeney’s script, direction, and acting elevate this film to a level deserving of praise and recognition.
Rating: 9/10.
