FEDE ÁLVAREZ: The Hombre Behind the new “ALIEN,” Film.(Spotlight)

by Alfredo Galindo.

The last week of June was a success for Mexican born, Academy Award Winning Actress Lupita Nyong’o for the box office smash of the prequel “A Quiet Place: Day One” and also a group of Latinos who became members of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Hollywood. The list included Mexican born creators such as actress Kate del Castillo and director Lila Aviles (“Totem”); Puerto Rican filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto (“Blue Beetle”) and a director born in the South of Latin America, Fede Alvarez, who next August 16th might hit gold just like Angel Manuel Soto did on August of last year when “Blue Beetle” took “Barbie” out of the box office top spot when he brings back to the big screen the “Alien” saga with “Alien: Romulus.”

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on February 8, 1978, Fede Alvarez is no stranger for resurrecting sagas as his first big Hollywood break was almost a decade ago when director and producer Sam Raimi, after watching some of his horror shorts such as “El Cojonudo” (2005) and “Panic Attack” (2009) was confident to give Fede the opportunity to adapt with the collaboration of his Uruguayan partner in those shorts, Rodo Sayagues, for a new generation Raimi’s cult classic “Evil Dead” on 2013 with a good response from audiences and critics.

Latino filmmaker Robert Rodriguez who called Fede to direct an episode of his the series inspired on his 1996 film “From Dusk Till Dawn.”

This good start caught the attention of a Sam Raimi fan, Latino filmmaker Robert Rodriguez who called Fede to direct an episode of his the series inspired on his 1996 film “From Dusk Till Dawn” in 2014 and made way for Fede and friend/ collaborator Rodo Sayagues to explore their original material for the sleeper box office hit “Don’t Breathe” (2016), a success that pushed a 2021 sequel which became Rodo’s directorial film debut as Fede got involved on a new chapter for another popular franchise, 2018’s “The Girl In the Spider’s Web”, starring Claire Foy (“The Crown”) and Academy Award nominee LaKeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”).

Fede Alvarez takes his biggest challenge to date: bring back to the big screen the next chapter of the classic science fiction and horror saga of “Alien” with “Romulus.”

As said, this August Fede Alvarez takes his biggest challenge to date: bring back to the big screen the next chapter of the classic science fiction and horror saga of “Alien” with “Romulus”, but something very good had to put Fede on the table to convince original helmer and producer Ridley Scott to follow up his own 2017’s “Alien: Covenant”. This way, Fede Alvarez takes the torch of a saga which propelled the careers of young filmmakers on its time such as James Cameron (“Aliens”) and David Fincher (“Alien 3”) but he’s adding also for the first time a Latina lead stepping on Sigourney Weaver’s shoes with Isabel Merced (“Dora and the List City of Gold”; “Turtles All the Way Down”). Besides, being Robert Zemeckis’ 1985 classic “Back to the Future” Fede’s favorite film, adds more spice to his new project as it’s the first one he makes in Hollywood dealing, besides horror, with the science fiction genre he’s also fond of.

Mucha mierda Fede!!!
