Latinos Score Big? 2024 Emmy Noms & Snubs!

by Latino Slant Staff

Wednesday Morning gave high hopes for a bunch of Latina creators before and behind the cameras including a new project where Latino pop music star Ricky Martin goes back to acting with a new Emmy nominated project after the Ryan Murphy American Crime Story winning chapter for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” in 2017.

Selena Gomez Receives First Acting Emmy Nom for ‘Only Murders in the Building’

The Noms

That was the big news at least between two nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series of 2024 where the third season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building”, produced and starring Selena Gomez (who got another Best Comedy Actress of 2024 for it) competes head to head with the first season of Apple TV Plus “Palm Royale”, produced and starring Academy Award nominee actress Kristen Wiig and starring precisely Ricky Martin with a star studded cast from comedy legend Carol Burnett to Academy Award Winner Alison Janney.

“Only Murders in the Building” and “Palm Royals” have a tough competition ahead in the same category with the company of titles such as “Abbott Elementary”; “The Bear”; “Curb Your Enthusiasm”; “Hacks”; “Reservation Dogs” and “What We Do in the Shadows”.

Selena Gomez and Kristen Wiig compete besides their role as producers in the Best Comedy Actress category against Quinta Brunson for “Abbot Elementary”; Ayo Edeberi for “The Bear”; Maya Rudolph for “Loot” and Jean Smart for “Hacks”.

Speaking of “The Bear”, Latina actress Liza Colon-Zayas got her first Emmy nomination with a strong competition in the Best Supporting category which includes such acting legends like Carol Burnett for “Palm Royale” and Meryl Streep for “Only Murders in the Building” to Hannah Einbinder for “Hacks”; Janelle James and Emmy Winner Sheryl Lee Ralph both for “Abbott Elementary”.

Landing on Drama Series the acclaimed science fiction Netflix’ series “3 Body Problem” from the creators of “Game of Thrones” and starring among others Eiza Gonzalez in a very well crafted Mexican scientist character faces a though competition as well in the Outstanding Drama Series.

Related to Mexican talent, director Issa López got a couple of the 5 nominations for Max’ “True Detective: Night Country,” just like its main star, two time Academy Award Winner Jodie Foster both for producers in the category of Best Limited or Anthology series; Jodie for Best Actress; Issa for Best Directing; John Hawkes for Best Supporting Actor and Kali Reisz for Best Supporting Actress of 2024.

Sofia Vergara has earned her fifth Emmy Award nomination today for her portrayal of real-life drug queenpin Griselda Blanco in the Netflix miniseries Griselda, the first dramatic role of her career.

Finally, still in the Limited Anthology of Anthology Series, previous nominee Colombian actress Sofia Vergara for the comedy series “Modern Family” now competes for Best Actress for her dramatic turn for the Netflix bet “Griselda”, which she also produced. Best of luck for everything!

The Snubs

To say Latinos, Both in front of and behind the camera, were snubbed would mean caliber shows with Latino themes and casts would actually have to be on air. A true erasure of these wonderful stories took place all within the last calendar year, (eligibility for the 2024 Emmys, television programming had to air between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024.) This terrible and odd predicament for Latino professionals in Hollywood is true irony. A complete lack of regard from the tv studios/networks to support these unique shows while at the same time the industry in effect is being kept alive by the massive US Latino viewing audiences. Does Hollywood owe us? Not at all. Is this a blow to a generation of hard working creatives taking the risks with said shows? Absolutely. Yet Hollywood strikes again and hard.

Here are your no nominees from TV Streamers/Networks cancelled shows. This Fool on Hulu, The Horror of Dolores Roach, With Love and Primo were all axed by Amazon Prime. I would put up a Justina Machado (The Horror of Dolores Roach,) nomination against a Kali Reisz, a character originally written as a Latina, anyday in any show. If we are talking calibre of talent not a diversity check. Gimme Michelle Ortiz & Laura Patalano(This Fool,) nominations over a Hannah Einbinder (Hacks, HBO/Max) or Meryl Streep (Only Murders in the Building, Hulu.)

Its not all doom and gloom as Mexicanas Issa López (True Detective: Night Country, HBO/Max) has been nominated for producing and writing as well and the incredibly talented Nava Mau got a massive nomination for her role in Baby Reindeer.

So maybe Latino-themed shows are going the way of the Dodo bird. Latino talent is seeping in top tier shows, so all is not lost, just our precious stories will have to wait for now. And perhaps this old Chicano, like the Dodo bird, with my last breath is screaming to the heavens, as these stories keep being erased.
