Solid “The Bad Guys 2,” Successfully Expands its World.

by Rosa Parra

The much-anticipated sequel from DreamWorks, “The Bad Guys 2,” has finally arrived! But does it live up to the success of its predecessor? Let me break it down for you.

Directed by Pierre Perifel, “The Bad Guys 2” features the voices of Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Anthony Ramos, Craig Robinson, Marc Maron, Zazie Beetz, Danielle Brooks, Maria Bakalova, and Natasha Lyonne. The group returns as newly reformed former thieves, trying to live an honest and transparent life. However, a new group emerges from the dark underworld, threatening to tempt the original Bad Guys back to their old ways.

I was impressed by the first film, particularly due to the fantastic dynamic among the characters. Their unique abilities complemented each other well, creating a great sense of friendship. In this sequel, I enjoyed both the returning and new characters, especially Kitty Cat—she was a total badass! The inclusion of an all-female group of thieves was particularly well-done, and I loved how they were introduced and integrated into the story.

One standout moment was the lucha libre sequence, which was incredible! Jaime Camil’s character in that scene was both seductive and tough. I never thought I’d find myself bobbing along to a Cardi B song during a lucha libre fight, but it really worked!

The animation in “The Bad Guys 2” was also a highlight. Many fight sequences were kinetic and had an anime style, with a few shots briefly transitioning into 2D animation. It reminded me of the recent “Puss in Boots” movie. The film features various action sequences, along with an engaging romantic subplot. Sorry, Commissioner!

While the film isn’t groundbreaking, it does take some significant risks, especially in its surprising third act. The soundtrack is enjoyable and includes recognizable songs that enhance the overall experience. The audience at the screening I attended included many children, and they all seemed to be having a great time. At least, that’s how it appeared to me.

“The Bad Guys 2” is a solid sequel that successfully expands its world and evolves its characters. -The Latino Slant

The Bad Guys have not lost their touch. Despite being in retirement, they prove they can still take on a high-risk mission and succeed. Although the Phantom Bandits are skilled in their own right, the original Bad Guys show that they remain unparalleled in their craft. Even though they’re trying to go straight, they still face societal bias, with the world viewing them as the greatest villains.

Overall, “The Bad Guys 2” is a solid sequel that successfully expands its world and evolves its characters. This action-packed animated film is sure to entertain children.

Rating: 7/10.
