As 2025 comes to a close, we reflect on a year filled with a wide variety of newly released films, showcasing diverse runtimes, genres, stories, budgets, and box office performances. While I have a deep passion for cinema and make an effort to attend as many screenings as possible, it’s not feasible for me to watch every film released. Therefore, here are my top 10 movies of 2025!
10. Freaky Tales
This stylish punk rock action-comedy anthology that takes place in the 1980s was truly memorable—and it’s a genre that’s rarely explored. I particularly loved the gruesome, action-packed third act, and that ending is one for the ages. Tio Pedro (Pascal) can do no wrong; his storyline was especially moving. It’s hard to believe that a film set in the 1980s is considered a period piece, but here we are. This is definitely a movie worth checking out! – Streaming on HBO Max
9. Superman
James Gunn’s interpretation of this superhero was fantastic! I loved the dynamic between Clark and Lois; it was perfect. The side characters were also great, and what I enjoyed most were the songs incorporated throughout the film. Plus, Krypto the dog was absolutely adorable! – Streaming on HBO Max
8. The Perfect Neighbor
This documentary is haunting in its subject matter and groundbreaking in its use of filmmaking, primarily relying on police camera footage. It also incorporates investigative interviews to explore the circumstances surrounding the events depicted. It serves as a chilling exposé on contemporary society. – Streaming on Netflix
7. The Fantastic 4: First Steps
My favorite superhero film of the year is definitely a family story, which isn’t surprising coming from me. Sue Storm is my personal idol in this movie. Vanessa Kirby portrays motherhood with such passion and realism that it had a profound impact on me. The scene in the third act, where she sacrifices her life to save her child, was especially moving. Overall, the movie was excellent, and I can’t wait to see how the characters’ stories progress in the upcoming Avengers films. – Streaming on Disney Plus
6. Selena y Los Dinos
This documentary successfully presents a fresh perspective on a story that has often been retold. While most films portray Selena’s life and story through the lens of a crime drama, this documentary celebrates her legacy. Featuring never-before-seen footage, it achieves the remarkable feat of giving Selena a voice, allowing her to share her own story and the journey to her success. – Streaming on Netflix
5. Twinless
This dark comedy-drama was one of the biggest surprises at Sundance earlier this year. It features a compelling premise and skillfully explores a range of human emotions, including grief, codependency, loyalty, betrayal, and ultimately, friendship. With sharp writing, brilliant direction, and superb performances, this movie deserves recognition for its various aspects of filmmaking. – Currently on VOD
4. The Ballad of Wallis Island
This comedy drama was also a delightful gem from this year’s Sundance. When a millionaire hires a once-successful musical duo, old tensions resurface. What gives this film the edge from other comedy drama’s is the leading performance from Tim Key as Charles. His character could have easily been overly annoying but Key’s comedic timing and natural charm makes him adorable and fun to be around. The film is full of heart and a beautiful reminder of what makes life meaningful. – Streaming on Amazon Prime
3. Marty Supreme
This sports drama is intense, dynamic, thrilling, and full of surprises. From beginning to end, it features non-stop action, with the table tennis games becoming increasingly intense as the film progresses. The characters are complex and unlikable yet feel realistic. And Chalamet delivers an award-worthy leading performance as Marty, perfectly capturing the ambition of American youth, who will go to any lengths to achieve their goals. The memorable ending will leave this film resonating in your mind for quite some time. – Currently in theaters
2. 28 Years Later
This film left me in a profound state of contemplation. I loved how this zombie coming-of-age story took me on various journeys and introduced me to memorable characters. The depiction of life and the afterlife was fantastic. The wonderful performances and chaotic camera work made me invested in the stories and immersed me in the uncertainty of the world. I can’t wait for the sequel, which is set to be released in early 2026. – Streaming on Netflix
1. Frankenstein
The Master of Monsters has once again outdone himself. Guillermo del Toro has directed the best film of 2025. This story about a monster creator is also deeply human, resonating with today’s social and political climate. As a medical professional, I found it compelling as a reflection on the current state of medicine. Jacob Elordi delivers a magnetic performance; his height and appearance enhance his already remarkable acting skills. He conveys innocence, curiosity, and a level of tenderness that feels almost otherworldly. The character Victor embodies an ego and a lack of consideration for the bodies he works with, which mirrors the experiences of many doctors in our medical system. Financial ambitions often lead to inconsideration and unethical practices. This story of fathers and sons beautifully highlights the complexities of life, emphasizing the importance of companionship, family, mindfulness, and kindness. The film stayed with me longer than I expected. It delivers a message we desperately need. – Streaming on Netflix
