Warm and Fuzzy “Lilo & Stitch,” leans on the importance of “Ohana.”

Movie review on one of Disney’s most highly anticipated films of 2025.

The Disney live-action films have received a mixed reception overall. With “Lilo and Stitch” being one of the last movies to get the live-action treatment, this film faces additional pressure from fans due to its beloved status within the community.

“Lilo and Stitch” is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and features a cast that includes Maia Kealoha, Sydney Agudong, Hannah Waddingham, Billy Magnussen, Zach Galifianakis, and Chris Sanders as the voice of Stitch. This film is a remake of the original animated movie, in which Nani strives to maintain guardianship of Lilo while facing the challenges of being a responsible adult..

I admit that I don’t have a strong connection to the animated version of the film. I have seen it, but I didn’t really connect with it until later, so I lack that nostalgic attachment. My expectations for this film weren’t particularly high, which may explain why I wasn’t disappointed by it. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it either. I was entertained and, to some extent, moved by it.

Maia's portrayal of Lilo! She was a delight to watch and truly captured Lilo’s rebellious nature, as well as her sweet and playful side -The Latino Slant

This remake does have several shot-by-shot parallels to the animated version, but it also introduces some changes, particularly in the ending. I really enjoyed Maia’s portrayal of Lilo! She was a delight to watch and truly captured Lilo’s rebellious nature, as well as her sweet and playful side. Her dynamic with Nani felt genuine, and their back-and-forth banter resembled that of sisters who frequently argue, while also reflecting the relationship of a mother and daughter trying to figure things out. I loved it. The film gives Nani more background, which ultimately impacts the ending of this version.

Stitch truly steals the show. This cute, chaotic, and immensely adorable alien is incredibly entertaining, and I loved every moment he was on screen. The antagonists were also well-developed, and the addition of new characters fit in nicely. The perfectly timed use of the iconic score quickly drew me into this world. Additionally, the quieter moments between Lilo and Nani are heartfelt and impactful, thanks to both the story and their on-screen chemistry.

The heartbeat of this film is undoubtedly Ohana, which means family. Lilo, Stitch, and Nani come together to form a family unit, -The Latino Slant

The heartbeat of this film is undoubtedly Ohana, which means family. Lilo, Stitch, and Nani come together to form a family unit, and what I appreciated most was their transparency in depicting an imperfect family. Sometimes, individuals make mistakes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad people. We may not always get along, but we will always be there for each other, no matter what. In today’s world, this message is particularly beautiful. I especially appreciated the ending, as it introduces a level of reality that is often overlooked.

Overall, “Lilo and Stitch” is a solid remake that effectively portrays a more realistic familial relationship. It courageously explores the potential consequences of not achieving maturity. This fun family movie will leave audiences with a warm and fuzzy feeling about the importance of family.
